The History of Newport Recreation Center
The Newport Recreation Center, built as the public high school in 1933, serves a community of nearly 900 households as a community center. Closed as a high school in 1985, the buildings were purchased by the Newport Community Action Committee (NCAC) for $25,000 from Giles County.
The Newport High School building is an excellent example of a Works Project Administration (WPA) sponsored building. It is an architecturally significant structure that contributes to the Historic Village of Newport and the Greater Newport Rural Historic District.
Since the closing of the school, the Center continues to play a key role in the lives of the people of Newport. It is employed in every aspect of community life as a site for community meetings; dinners, concerts and gatherings; classes, family reunions, youth activities, art studios, the Newport Agricultural Fair, Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a Kids Korner provides social and creative activities along with networking for parents and their youngsters.
